In the 15. and 16. century Antwerp was one of the biggest city of the world. A centre of trading and culture. The museum of printers (Plantin-Moretus) and the cathedral chruch (Liebfrauenkathedrale) are part of the UNESCO cultural heritage.
Antwerp was in 1920 the site of the Olympic Games. The first Games after the World War and the only ones in Belgium.
In 2013 Antwerp got the title European Capital of Sport from the European Capitals of Sport Association after Istanbul in 2012.
